Polish Poems: 4 poems by Tadeusz Rozewicz

I decided to translate (in an amateur way) some Polish poems into English, so you could understand them. I think that even if you won't like them, this will be a valuabe experience. I'll start with Tadeusz Różewicz (born in 1921 and still active - his last poetry book was published 4 years ago). I decided to keep the Polish originals and write the translation near them (it may be helpful, if somebody learns Polish).

But before translating I'd like to write some things about Różewicz himself.

During World War II he was a soldier of Armia Krajowa [link] , a Polish underground army fighting with the nazis. This period of his life left a massive imprint on him and his works. After the end of the war he was trying to create a new type of poetry, which would still be authentic after the tragedy of this event and the downfall of human. In 1968, middle 70s and at the beginning of 80s he was a serious candidate for Nobel Prize.

And now the poems... I'm sorry if the translations sound crappy You can correct me, if you see a mistake


1. Przepaść (The Abyss)

Babcia w czarnych sukniach (A granny in black dresses)
Drucianych okularach (Wire glasses)
Z laseczką (With a walking sticky)
Stawia stopę (Puts her foot)
Nad przepaścią krawężnika cofa (She retreats above the abyss of the kerbstone/curbstone)
Rozgląda się bojaźliwie (She looks around timidly)
Choć nie widać śladu samochodu (Even though no sign of a car can be seen)

Podbiega do niej chłopczyk (A small boy runs up to her)
Bierze za rękę (Takes her hand)
I przeprowadza (And leads her)
Przez otchłań ulicy (Through the street oblivion)
Na drugi brzeg (On the other bank)

Rozstępują się
Straszliwe ciemności (The frightful darkness scamper off)
Nagromadzone nad światem (They were accrued above the world)
Przez złych ludzi (By evil people)
Kiedy w sercu (When in the heart)
Małego chłopca (Of the small boy)
Świeci iskierka (Shines a spark)
Miłości (Of love)



2. Koncert życzeń (Concert of Requests)
Opowiadanie babuni z kraju chrześcijańskiego (The Story of a Granny From a Christian Country)

Chodzę po domu na czworakach (I walk all-rours at home)
Na palcach chowam się po kątach (Walking on my tiptoes, I hide myself on the corners)
Udaję starą salopkę (I pretend that I'm an old cloak)
Miotełkę do zamiatania (A duster for sweeping)

Nie rzucam się w oczy w ten sposób (In such way I can't be seen clearly)
Uśmiecham się do wszystkich (I smile to everyone)
Nawet do klamki słucham kroków (I listen to the steps even to the door-handle)

Kiedyś wsadziłam palec do garnuszka (Once I put my finger to the little pot)
Z miodem (With honey)
Odezwały się głosy trąb (The trumpets sounded)
Sąd ostateczny (Last judgment)
Mdli mnie (I faint)
Z miłości (Out of love)
Przedmioty mają zęby i pazury (The objects have teeth and claws)

Ta szafa co stoi otwarta (This wardrobe which stays open)
To mamusia wasza i babcia (It's your mommy and granny)
To krzesło (This chair)
Które przestawiają z kąta w kąt (Which is being rearranged from corner to corner)
To też babcia (It's also a granny)

Kochanej mamuni i babuni (For beloved mommy and granny)
W dniu sto pierwszych urodzin (In the hundred and first birthday)
Dwustu lat życzą (We wish two hundreds years of living)*
Syn synowa i wnuki (Son daughter-in-law and grandchildren)

*Typical Polish Birthday wishes is "Sto lat" [I/We wish you (hundred years) of living] - of course in the situation, when someone is close to being 100 years old or is even older, you have to use a bigger number)



3. Bez (Without)
